In a recent turn of events a man from Pennsylvania is reported to have gone to far extents to prove that poker does not fall under gambling law restrictions because it is a game based on skill and not chance. Lawrence Burns, a 65 year old resident of Pennsylvania was charged with 12 accounts of illegal gambling misdemeanors in 2007.
The old man was further accused by law enforcers for conducting illegal poker tournaments in the area. Although the senior resident admitted to organizing poker tournaments, he claimed that they were not illegal because poker was not a game of chance but skill. According to the report in the Pittsburgh post, the man said that poker could not be classified as a gambling game for that reason and so he couldn’t be charged for illegal gambling. Mr. Burn even had a few experts to support his case.
Dr. Robert Hannum a professor at University of Denver and Matthew Rousu professor at Susquehanna University came to the poker enthusiast’s aid with their expert opinion and hard core facts. The two presented statistical evidence and testified that poker is not a game of chance unlike other gambling games and required skill to play. After their two hour deliberation, the 12 person jury rejected the opinion that were presented and found burn guilty on all 12 accounts. The poker lover however does not plan to give up that easy and is making moves to appeal the case and to also play poker online games to make some money in the time being.
